Motherhood Wonders

"And Allah has extracted you from the wombs of your mothers not knowing a thing, and He made for you hearing and vision, and intellect that perhaps you would be grateful." An-Nahl (16:78)

Raising Confident Girls

So, how can we raise confident girls who will become strong women as they grow?

*Verbally and non-verbally, send a strong message that we trust them.

*Leave empowering notes in their lunch bags or rooms. Even the teens would really appreciate it.

*Appreciate and value their hard work and efforts (process over product). There is so much pressure to get a hundred percent on everything. However, in real life, perfection does not matter but doing our best does.

*Allow them to problem-solve. While growing up, ask them questions and encourage them to find solutions to their own problems.

*Speak positively about other women (discourage gossiping). When girls see women in their homes speak negatively about other women, they learn that attitude. It perpetuates competition amongst women.

*Help them become more aware of the world around them. Have discussions on current affairs, ask for their opinion.

*As teens, they may become self-conscious. So, hear them out with an open mind and show empathy as they learn to deal with all the hormonal changes.

*Help develop a critical eye through conversations from an early age talking about the media, magazines, social media, and the messages they send. Help them become internet-smart by setting boundaries together and sharing why the boundaries are necessary e.g. phone-free Wednesdays or no internet time after 8 pm to give our minds a break.

*Break out of your comfort zone and talk about healthy relationships. If they talk about having a crush on someone, don’t dismiss them and use that opportunity to develop a good sense of relationships. Demonstrate through your own relationships with friends and family what truly matters in lasting, strong relationships.

*Share your struggles, difficult life experiences, and how you overcame them.

*Our girls get bullied by their own families and are body shamed. Model how she can stand up for herself and not accept body shaming or put-downs by anyone.
