Travel with baby

Traveling with a baby requires extra planning, but it's absolutely doable. Here's how to make travel with your little one smooth and enjoyable.

When to Travel

Babies under 3 months are often easiest to travel with—they sleep frequently and aren't mobile yet. However, their immune systems are still developing, and airplane cabins expose them to many germs. Many parents prefer waiting until baby is more robust.

Consider your destination and its medical resources. Remote locations without good hospitals pose risks. Beach vacations with easy access to your car for emergency departure may work better than mountain retreats far from medical care.

Travel by Air

Children under 2 fly free on domestic flights (lap infants). Book early to secure bulkhead seats with more legroom. Bring your car seat for safety and to guarantee a seat. Gate-check strollers to have them when you land.

During ascent and descent, nursing or bottle-feeding helps relieve ear pressure. Pack more diapers and supplies than you think necessary—delays happen. Bring familiar comfort items, snacks for older babies, and entertainment options. Accept that flights may be imperfect experiences.

Road Trips

Road trips offer more flexibility—stop whenever needed. Plan for frequent stops: feeding, diaper changes, and babywearing walks help everyone reset. Leave during baby's sleep time if possible to maximize everyone's rest.

Never leave baby unattended in a car, even briefly. The car can heat quickly even on mild days. Plan routes with facilities along the way. Bring a portable changing pad for diaper changes anywhere.

Packing Essentials

Pack the bulk of supplies in checked luggage but keep essentials in your carry-on: diapers (one per hour minimum plus extras), wipes, change of clothes for baby AND you, snacks, medications, favorite toys, and comfort items. Bring more formula or breast milk than you think necessary.

Download movies or download shows to your devices—wifi may be unreliable. Bring a portable white noise machine for accommodations. Consider a travel crib or bassinet if baby won't sleep in a pack 'n play.

Accommodations

Airbnb and VRBO offer kitchen access for preparing bottles and food. Hotels work but require packing more. Call ahead to confirmcrib availability—bring a portable one if uncertain. Consider your sleeping arrangements: where will baby sleep?

Baby-proof unfamiliar spaces quickly—get down on your hands and knees to spot hazards. Bring outlet covers and doorstoppers. Your baby may sleep differently away from home; go with the flow and prioritize safety.

Managing Stress

Travel with babies is unpredictable. A perfect flight can turn chaotic with one screaming baby. Accept that you cannot control everything. Prepare what you can, then release expectations about outcomes.

Other passengers have been where you are. Most are understanding. If you're struggling, accept help when offered and ignore judgmental looks. Your baby's needs come first—don't apologize for meeting them.
